Ervanário do Bolhão was opened in 1961 by Augusto Coutinho, the grandfather of the current owner. At the time, Augusto Coutinho was the President of the Vegetarian Society of Porto, and had a vast knowledge in the field of food and natural medicine. At that time, the founder of Ervanário do Bolhão benefited the city with a new food and health approach, and was distinguished by the Porto City Council for his contribution.

Later on, 40 years ago, the business was put in the hands of his son, also named Augusto Coutinho, who continued his work, along with his wife and with their daughter, Maria João Coutinho.

Maria João Coutinho, after graduating in the field, carried on with the family business and continues to work in the herbalist. Their stall offers each customer a personalized service, offering them guidance according to what was their grandfather's motto: "live in balance, with a healthy mind in a healthy body."
