From the colours and shapes of vegetables on the stalls defying gravity, to the smell of fruit and sausages, to the large &ldquo;curtains&rdquo; that dance in the wind, to the kind words that bounce between customers, to the hand on the lap and a smile on the face, visiting Bolh&atilde;o has always been a bustle of senses. It is this place of excess and collective memory, this intangible heritage that Bolh&atilde;o has always helped to preserve and keep alive, that Ana Types Type wanted to praise. The artist chose to represent two elements that are very much present in our cuisine, namely a cabbage and a chorizo, as the symbols of Bolh&atilde;o, such a special place.

BIOGRAPHY

Ana Types Type is Ana Areias, a designer and illustrator from Porto. Her obsession with bold, everyday shapes, colours and objects is present in the variety of projects she develops, from illustrations and graphic design, to textiles and products. She is the co-founder of Madre, a laboratory for experimenting with materials, shapes, and techniques. In the textile field, she has worked with Oi&ocirc;ba, Rug by Gur, and Slowdownstudio.

When she thinks of Mercado do Bolh&atilde;o, Ana Seixas immediately plunges into the memory of its stalls, filled with colour and variety. Since apples and pears are the fruits most present here, the artist decided to represent them as happy, cheerful characters. They are decorative ceramic pieces in stoneware, painted and glazed by hand. No two are alike, just like fruit.

Born in Viseu, in 1984, Ana Seixas studied Design at the University of Aveiro, and did a postgraduate course in Editorial Design at the Bau School, in Barcelona. She completed a postgraduate course in illustration for children and youth publications at Eina, also in Barcelona. Since 2014, she regularly collaborates on editorial projects, children&rsquo;s books and magazines, advertising campaigns, and packaging. In 2018, she started her path in ceramics. She began to bring all her paper characters over to clay, and thus new possibilities emerged, not only in terms of expression, but also for commercialization purposes. At the moment, most of her time is also dedicated to creating illustrations and ceramic items that fill the windows of her shop/workshop &mdash; a space in the centre of Porto that she opened in 2020, where she creates, exhibits, and sells her works. It is actually in this space and context that she feels most comfortable, and with the most creative freedom.

In the edition items for Mercado do Bolh&atilde;o, the concept of Projeto Ru&iacute;do is based on two of its main features: the emblematic architecture of the building, and its people. Based on this motto, the artists have created two compositions with several photographs, typography, and abstract elements from their personal archive &mdash; a mixture that has already been a feature of other works by these authors. Printed on an aluminium composite sheet, which gives some rigidity to the edition items, the public can choose between &#39;Memory&#39; or &#39;Tradition,&#39; two works intended to convey the feelings of those who live the city of Porto and its local market.

Ru&iacute;do is a creative project by the Portuguese artists Draw (Frederico Soares Campos, 1988), and Contra (Rodrigo Guinea Gon&ccedil;alves, 1984), both with paths strongly linked to graffiti and urban art. Ru&iacute;do materializes an artistic collaboration that interconnects the monochrome, figurative, deeply human universe of Draw, with the colourful, abstract, geometric, textural approach of Contra. The result is a unique, identifiable work, that gives life to compositions with a strong impact on the space where they are inserted, creating manyfold connections with the viewer. Focusing on the specificities of human condition, both physical, emotional and existential, the duo develops a questioning about the impact of the relationship between human beings and space, and about human interference in space. As the name implies, &quot;Ru&iacute;do,&quot; meaning Noise in Portuguese, reveals a type of art that unfolds in layers, apparently confused, but profoundly organized and symbolic. An ever-imposing work, generating an indispensable, unavoidably contemporary confrontation, which appeals to emotions and instigates much-needed reflection.

Mercado do Bolh&atilde;o has been a place of inspiration for Joana Caetano&#39;s work from a very early age. The sounds, smells, and memories were the starting point for her to create two characters that are a tribute to the salesmen and saleswomen of this market, filled with so much history. The t-shirt has an embroidery that could only be positioned in the place of the heart, and it represents many shopkeepers: The Ara&uacute;jo sisters from Barcelos, who would choose the artist&#39;s vegetables as if she were their daughter; Madalena Padeira, who would decorate the market with her verses, around the time of Saint John&#39;s; Am&eacute;lia, Madalena&#39;s daughter, who would sell her twice as much as the artist actually needed; Mrs. Gina and the lunches at her cafeteria; the saleswomen of colourful wildflowers, refreshing them in antique vases spread throughout the corridors; and, above all, the typical accent, the genuine slang, and the many words ending in &quot;little one,&quot; which are the soul and the best kept secret of this market.

BIOGRAPHY

Joana Caetano was born in 1980, in Castelo de Paiva. She graduated in Theatre &mdash; Scenography Design, at ESMAE, and worked as a costumes, props, and puppet assistant for several theatre companies in Porto. In 2009/2010, she attended traditional embroidery workshops in Guimar&atilde;es, at A Oficina. She studied and deepened her knowledge on traditional embroidery techniques from various regions in northern Portugal, in order to develop a brand created by her &mdash; Jubela. A project that had, as a starting point, the use of traditional free embroidery stitches, applied to illustrations inspired by folk art, and various objects typical of traditional Portuguese trade fairs and open-air markets. She offered training at professional schools (Modatex and Cearte), and worked in partnership with various artists, artisans, and illustrators. She currently teaches embroidery in Porto and Lisbon.
