The origins of Mercado do Bolhão, one of the most emblematic buildings in the city of Porto, date back to the mid-19th century, when the City Council of Porto decided to build a square on land acquired from the Church. At this time, by order of the architect Joaquim da Costa Sampaio Lima, places were allocated for the “Mercado Interno do Bolhão”.
